The driver of the BRTC bus that ran over and badly injured journalist Nikhil Bhadra in front of National Press Club this (Wednesday) morning was arrested from Mirpur Section No 12 at night.
The arrestee is Md Sohel, bus driver of Bangladesh Road Transport
Corporation (BRTC), the state-owned transport company.
Being informed, a team of Pallabi Police Station conducted a drive in
Mirpur-12 area and arrested Sohel from the local BRTC Bus Depot.
He had been absconding since the morning after escaping from his bus,
abandoning the vehicle on Topkhana Road in front of BMA Bhaban,
opposite to the NPC, immediately after the accident in which Kaler
Kontho reporter Nikhil Bhadra lost a leg.
Nikhil, a senior reporter of the vernacular daily, had his right leg
amputated at city`s Pongu Hospital hours after the crash.
Eyewitness said a local BRTC bus ran over Nikhil as he got down from
the same bus in the morning.
He was first rushed to Dhaka Medical College Hospital and later
shifted to the National Institute of Traumatology and Orthopedic
Research where his bruised right leg was incised.
Angered at the accident, journalists gathered and staged a protest
rally, demanding arrest of the bus driver and proper investigation
into the incident.
They also blocked the road which continued till late afternoon.
Traffic came to halt from Paltan Intersection to High Court area for
several hours due to the barricade put up by the protesting journos.
