Paper mill shut, fined Tk 31 lakh for polluting Shitalakkha

Department of Environment (DoE) on Wednesday fined a paper mill in Rupganj upazila Tk 31 lakh for polluting Shitalakkha River for the last 11 years.

A mobile court, led by DoE Director (enforcement) Md Munir Chowdhury
raided Lina Paper Mills Ltd, established in early 2001, and fined it
Tk 3100,000 on charge of running the mill without setting up an
effluent treatment plant liquid (ETP) in the mill violating the DoE
law, thus contaminating water of Shitalakkha by discharging its
untreated liquid wastes into the river for the last 11 years.

The court sources said the management of the mill had been operating
it without obtaining an environment certificate. Beside it funneled
200,000-cubic-meter untreated liquid chemical waste into Shitalakkha
in the last one decade seriously harming environment.

The mill authority has been asked to obtan certificate from DoE and
set up ETP before restarting the paper mill.
