Accusing opposition leader Khaleda Zia of siding with war criminals, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Saturday renewed her commitment to hold the war crimes trial as it is now the public demand.

“I would like to say that the people of Bangladesh want the trial of
the war criminals as they [people] have awakened,” she said while
addressing a mammoth gathering at Sheikh Kamal Stadium here in the
afternoon.

Hasina said opposition leader Khaleda Zia, having failed to save the
killers of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, has stood beside the
war criminals as the present government has started holding their
trial.

“You (Khaleda) are conspiring to save the war criminals…you betrayed
the country by making Nizami (Matiur Rahman Nizami) a Minister and
allowed him to hoist the national flag,” the Prime Minister said.

She said BNP had turned Bangladesh into a corrupt, militant and
extremist state, and killed people in the name of ‘Operation Clean
Heart’.

About secret killings in the country, the premier said Zia (Ziaur
Rahman) had started these acts in the country in 1975 by killing Col
Taher, Maj Huda and Maj Haider. He (Zia) also betrayed the 30 lakh
freedom fighters of the country, she added.

After the Liberation War, Hasina said, the trial of some 11,000 war
criminals started and they were in jail. “But, after assuming power,
Zia freed them, awarded them Bangladesh citizenship.”

The Prime Minister alleged that Zia also allowed the war criminals to
do politics amending the constitution through martial law, and
started the killing of the freedom fighters in the country.

She said Zia’s wife (Khaleda) also gave killer Rashid and Huda the
opportunity to do politics, and even made them members of parliament.

Sheikh Hasina said the BNP leaders amassed wealth through corruption
and stole money from an orphanage fund.

“To them (BNP), assuming power means killing and making their own
fortunes…they understand these things very well. So, they didn’t do
anything for the welfare of the country’s people.”

The Prime Minister also described the various development activities
taken by the present government and also during its 1996- 2001 tenure.

She said the present government has been able to generate 2994 MW of
electricity though the BNP-led alliance government failed to add even
1 MW of electricity.

About the dilapidated conditions of roads and highways, she lamented
that the BNP did no repair and maintenance woks on the roads and
highways during its tenure.

The Prime Minister also said the government is trying to ensure
maximum utilization of the country’s resources.

AL presidium member Sheikh Fazlul Karim Selim, Mk Alamgir, Civil
Aviation and Tourism Minister Faruk Khan, PM’s Health Adviser Dr Syed
Modasser Ali, Standard Bank Chairman Kazi Akram Uddin Ahmed and AL
leader Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah, among others, spoke at the public
meeting chaired by acting Gopalganj district AL president Raja Mia
Batu.

Earlier, the Prime Minister laid the foundation stones of the
Tungipara Upazila Parishad Bhaban, Sheikh Fazilatunnesa Mujib Eye
Hospital, Technical Training Institute at Gopalganj Sadar.

She also inaugurated a 100-MW power plant and laid the foundation
stone of Sayera Khatun Medical College and Hospital.
