Comilla city polls get underway

Residents of Comilla City started casting  ballots at 8am on Thursday in their first-ever city corporation polls  amid a festive mood. A total of 169,279 voters, including 86,078
women, will cast their votes in 421 polling booths of 65 polling  centers in 27 general wards in the 53.04-sqkm city corporation to elect a mayor and 27 ward councilors. Besides the 27 general ward councillors, voters will cast their votes to elect female ward councillors from among 69 candidates vying from the seats set aside for women. Among the popular mayoral candidates, Awami League-backed candidate Adv Afzal Khan will cast his vote at Modern Primary School
centre while Nagarik Committee hopeful Monirul Haque Sakku at Shoilo Rani Govt Primary School. Jatiya Party-supported Ahmed Selim will cast his vote at Islami Adarsha High School while AL rebel mayoral candidate Nur-ul-Rahman Mahmud Tanim at Comilla Victoria Collegiate
High School Centre. Another AL rebel candidate Anisur Rahman Mithu will cast his vote at Ashoktola Ishaque Govt Primary School centre.

To ensure smooth polls, 2,200 police and Ansar, 800 RAB and 150 BGB members will perform their daylong duty under nine judicial magistrates and 27 executive magistrates apart from nine assistant returning officers. Twenty-seven polls observers of the Election Commission will monitor the voting. Meanwhile, Democracywatch in a release said their 10 members, split into two mobile teams, will be watching the day-long vote.
