Police and Coast Guard members found the bodies of two unidentified men floating in the river close to Char Kishori where the MV Shariatpur-1 launch sank.
Additional district magistrate Mahfuzul Haq said they have so far identified 39 bodies and handed those over to their relatives.
Relatives of the missing passengers are still waiting on the riverbanks for the bodies of their beloved ones.
The Dhaka-bound MV Shariatpur-1 with nearly 300 passengers on board sank in the river after it was hit by an oil-laden cargo vessel around 2:30am Tuesday.
Rescue vessels ‘Rustom’ and ‘Hamza’ salvaged the sunken launch on Wednesday afternoon, nearly 37 hours after it capsized in the river.
Hours after the accident, Shipping Minister Shahjahan Khan visited the spot and promised to provide compensation to the families of the deceased.
As per his commitment, every family of the deceased will be given Tk 30,000. If there’re more than one dead in a single family, they’ll be given Tk 45,000 each.
The Ministry of Shipping on Tuesday formed a five-member committee led by joint secretary Baitul Amin Riyad to probe the incident. The probe body was asked to submit its report within five days.
